With a pleasant northern subtropical maritime monsoon climate, Shanghai enjoys four distinct seasons, generous sunshine and abundant rainfall.

Generous sunshine and abundant rainfall:
Shanghai enjoys full sunshine and abundant rainfall all year around. The average annual temperature is 16 degrees Celsius. The highest temperature appears in July and August, with an average at 28 degrees Celsius. The lowest temperature comes in January, with an average at 4 degrees Celsius. The city has a frost-free period lasting up to 230 days a year, and receives an average annual rainfall of 1,200 millimeters. However, nearly 60% of the rainfall comes during the May-September flood season, which is divided into three rainy periods, namely, the Spring Rains, the Plum Rains and the Autumn Rains.

Distinct seasons:
Shanghai has warm spring, hot summer, cool autumn and cold winter. Its spring and autumn are relatively short compared with summer and winter. Its winter has about 126 days and its summer about 110 days, while the spring and autumn add up to about 130 days.
There is no freezing winter or broiling summer in Shanghai. One may travel to Shanghai all year around. The spring and autumn are the best tour seasons.
